Out of the BluePrint

This exhibition is produced collaboratively between Out of the Blueprint and NHS Lothian Charity: Tonic Arts as part of a partnership committed to bringing vibrant and diverse artwork into healthcare environments.
Out of the Blueprint is an eco-print studio based in Leith that was set up in 2015 with the purpose of supporting young people under 25.
The studio provides sustainable printing services for charities and community organisations and uses the proceeds to support their core work – traineeships, artists residencies, exhibitions, workshops and educational projects, all celebrating young talent in the city. Their core purpose is to help young artists to realise their potential whatever stage they are at.
Each year, Out of the Blueprint hosts four paid residencies for artists in Scotland aged 18 – 24. The artists are given a freelance fee, their own studio space, access to the studio’s eco-friendly riso printers and support and guidance over a three-month production period. The residencies emphasise exploration and an open-ended playful approach, encouraging artists to push the boundaries of their practice and to create work that they want to make.
This year Out of the Blueprint celebrated their 10th anniversary, which allowed an opportunity to look back and to select a range of printworks from the archives. The summer show, Print Expo 2525 was held at The Drill Hall in Leith during August 2025. It featured work by 25 young artists who have had a residency at the studio over the past decade. The artworks reflect the artist’s own stories and points of view, as well as offering glimpses of the broader social and political contexts around them during their time in the studio.
We’re delighted to now bring the exhibition to the walls of the Western General Hospital and we invite you to explore, reflect and engage with the work that celebrates the resilience and creativity of young artists in Scotland today.
